Goat Races at

Yellowwood State Forest

Dec. 17, 2023

Event:   Goat Races at Yellowwood in Indiana's Brown County

Date: 12/17/2023

Location:  Yellowwood State Forest Picnic Shelter (39.18083, -86.33768)

Event Director:  Robert Minto

We are excited to bring Goat Races back to the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio area on Sun. Dec. 17 at Yellowwood State Forest.

Goat races are individual, ultra-long, mass start point-to-point orienteering races usually held in hilly terrain - hence the name.  Unlike most point-to-point orienteering races, following is allowed, and even encouraged.  According to the rules set by the course setter, one or more controls can be skipped and sometimes there is forking in the course so strategic choices are important.  Racers will not be able to see the map before the mass start.

Rob Minto is planning three course distances that will take full advantage of Yellowwood's steep ravines.   We will also offer a 1.5 hr score-O option for beginner and intermediate-skilled individuals and groups.

Course Lengths:

Ornery Brown Goat:  ~14 km

Hefty Brown Goat:  ~10 km

Gentle Brown Goat:  ~7 km

1.5 hr Score-O:  20 controls available; find as many as you can within the time limit
